Problems with my skin

This is the time of year when many rosacea sufferers complain of, “Problems with my skin.” This is because winter weather and wind can cause rosacea to flare. Our dermatologists in the Ballantyne area of Charlotte can offer the proper medications and recommendations that will keep your skin condition under control. Part of the problem is that during this time of year, everyone’s skin is subject to extremes from the bitter cold outside, in to the dry heat inside. Patients with rosacea problems with my skin conditions are much more likely to experience exacerbations under these extremes.

The cause of Rosacea

Scientists and doctors do not know the exact cause of rosacea, what seems consistent is that the condition commonly affects fair-skinned persons. Triggers can vary from one individual to the next, but the most common are cold dry air, spicy foods, caffeine, or excessive exposure to the sun’s rays. Rosacea problems with my skin patients must take extra precautions in the winter. Typical symptoms for this time of year can be one or more of the following:

  • Redness and bumps on the face
  • Redness appears more frequently and stays longer
  • Intense itching and burning
  • Spidery veins under the skin
  • The skin will display signs of swelling

The appropriate medical therapy, and gentle interventions that soothe the skin, can help make this a more comfortable time of year.

Tips for dealing with rosacea in cold weather

  • Always wear sunblock
  • Faithfully stick with your medication
  • Avoid direct contact with heat sources
  • Consider a cool mist humidifier for your home
  • Use mild cleansers and cream moisturizers, not lotions
  • Use only lukewarm water to avoid aggravating your skin
  • Protect your skin against harsh winter winds
  • Try relaxation techniques and stress-reducing strategies
  • Cool off hot drinks

A board-certified dermatologist can help you to understand how rosacea affects you personally, and can recommend the best course of action for your own rosacea in the winter.
