Chemical peels and aging skin
As we welcome in a new year, we can turn the clock back on our aging skin through a procedure called a chemical peel. It may sound too good to be true, but you can visit a Ballantyne area dermatologist and in one or two visits, diminish many signs of aging on your face, hands, neck, and chest. We are not suggesting that chemical peels are the definitive cure for aging skin, simply that it is an effective way to decrease wrinkles, leaving you with smoother skin and a brighter complexion.
A simple process
Depending upon your desired level of treatment, your dermatologist will recommend a pre-peel skin care plan. This will be necessary to prepare your skin for 2 to 4 weeks before your treatment. The goal is to ensure that you get the desired results with the lowest possible risk for side effects. On the day of your peel, the first step in the process will be a thorough cleansing of your skin, in order to remove oils and contaminants. Once your skin is prepared, a clinician gently applies the chemical peel, closely monitoring your skin carefully, removing the peel at just the right time. If your procedure is a deep peel, your skin will be treated one small section at a time.
The type of peel you undergo will determine your post procedure care. A medium peel may require the application of cool compresses and a soothing lotion or cream. A deep peel may require a surgical dressing. Based upon your condition and procedure, patients who undergo chemical peels require different levels of downtime. Healing for a light, refreshing peel may only last a day. Whereas, a deep chemical peel may require 10 to 14 days or longer for complete healing. Again, based upon your desired results, you may need to have 3 to 5 treatments. Naturally, chemical peels cannot stop the aging process, your dermatologist can tell you what results to expect, based upon your own individual condition.
What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is exactly what it sounds like. A highly trained clinician, under the supervision of your Charlotte dermatologist, is the use of chemicals to rejuvenate aging skin. Chemical peels are also effective for the management of acne and conditions that discolor the skin. Many patients depend on chemical peels to remove fine lines under the eyes or around the mouth.
The first step is to see a dermatologist. He or she will determine the most appropriate type of treatment for your skin condition. As we mentioned above, chemical peels are typically performed on the face, neck, or hands. They are highly effective in helping to reduce or improve the following skin conditions:
- Wrinkles and thin lines
- Certain types of acne
- Mild scarring
- Liver spots and sun spots
- Uneven skin color
As with all skin treatment procedures, patients must be conscientious about protecting their skin from excessive exposure to sunlight and harsh.
