Rosacea Awareness Month
April has been designated as Rosacea Awareness Month by The National Rosacea Society. The goal is to alert the public to the early warning signs and symptoms of this chronic skin disorder. It is estimated that more than 16 million Americans suffer with rosacea. We still have not discovered what causes rosacea, and there is no cure. The good news is that research has provided dermatologists with treatments that can effectively control rosacea. We want to help you identify signs and symptoms of rosacea, and encourage you to seek medical help. A Board Certified dermatologist can diagnose and recommend therapy that can help you to keep signs and symptoms under control. Your Charlotte dermatologist can also help you to cope with the social and emotional discomfort that affects most rosacea patients.
The severity of rosacea varies from one patient to the next. The most common symptoms may include flushing or redness, bumps and/or pimples, along with visible blood vessels. Although we do not know what causes rosacea, it can be managed primarily through topical medications, oral medications, and laser surgery. Early detection and intervention are indispensable tools for detecting, minimizing, and controlling rosacea. The redness commonly begins on the face, and can slowly spread beyond the nose and cheeks to the forehead and chin. In some cases, the ears, chest, and back can be red all the time. Rosacea can cause more than redness. There are so many signs and symptoms that rosacea has four subtypes:
- Redness, accompanied with flushing and visible blood vessels on the surface of the skin.
- Redness and swelling accompanied with acne-like breakouts.
- Thickened skin with a bumpy texture.
- Affects the eyes, they are commonly red and irritated. The eyelids can be swollen, and person may have what looks like a sty.
As the disease advances, patients with rosacea can develop permanent redness in the center of their face.
